A friction hinge for a laptop computer consists of an outer housing member 21 and an inner shaft 30 with non-metallic friction material 40 disposed thereabout. The friction material is rotatable within the outer housing. The lateral surfaces of the inner shaft are either distanced or separated by frictional material from the inner surfaces of the outer housing member. Both inner shaft and outer housing member may be adapted to be connected to different parts of computer casing (at 35, 37, 24 and 25). The inner shaft may be provided with a locking mechanism 34 to lock the friction material motionless with respect to the inner shaft and the friction material may be provided with a corresponding locking mechanism upon its inner surface 43. The friction material may provide higher friction at lower rotation speeds and lower friction at higher rotation speeds for ease of positioning the relative parts of the casing.
