PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new gene coding for an ozone-induced ethylene synthetase of a plant, participating in the generation of plant damage caused by air-polluting ozone, having high ozone resistance and useful for the breeding, etc., of a plant having ozone-cleaning capability. SOLUTION: This new gene has an amino acid sequence expressed by the formula or an amino acid sequence obtained by the modification of the above amino acid sequence by the addition, depletion and/or substitution of one to small number of amino acids and codes for an ethylene synthetase of a plant of the genus Populus, etc., induced of its manifestation by ozone. It participates in the generation of plant damage caused by air-polluting ozone, has high ozone resistance and is useful e.g. for the breeding of a plant having an ozone-cleaning capability. The ethylene synthetase gene can be produced by preparing a cDNA library using an mRNA extracted from a plant of the genus Populus and cloning the library by PCR method using a primer consisting of a part of an ethylene synthetase gene. |
