Fructose ester- beta -cyclodextrin complexes and processes for making and using same

A specialized derivative of fructose in which the compound is a fructose ester complexed with beta -cyclodextrin. Preferably, the fructose derivative is fructosehexanoate beta -cyclodextrin complex, and more preferably the fructose derivative is fructose-1-O-hexanoate beta -cyclodextrin complex. Fructose pentanoate and fructose heptanoate beta -cyclodextrin complexes are also included within the scope of the invention, and the fructose ester and the beta -cyclodextrin must be combined in approximately molar equivalent amounts. The present invention also includes a method for treating animals and humans with the instant fructose derivatives, to protect against tissue damage caused by doxorubicin cytotoxicity (particularly doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy or mucositis), ischemia, radiation damage and other sources of free oxygen radical cellular damage to the tissue of living animals and humans. The present fructose derivative is an active agent which is appropriately incorporated in a pharmaceutical dosage form which may be but need not be an aqueous solution, and the pharmaceutical composition may be given in a wide range of doses to address either acute or chronic needs.
