PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the multilevel picture of high quality with less memory capacity. SOLUTION: A window generation part 121 takes in an area (window) in prescribed size in a binary picture (the area of a graphic or a photograph picture). A size decision part 122 recognizes the picture pattern or counts the number of black picture elements in the window for respective rows and columns, estimates the picture pattern from the counting results of the rows and the columns and decides (switches) the size of a smoothing filter in accordance with the picture pattern by executing a pattern matching processing on the window. On the other hand, a smoothing processing part 123 executes a multilevel processing by the smoothing filters of the respective sizes on the binary picture and generates the multilevel picture. An output selection part 124 selects and outputs the multilevel picture processed by using the smoothing filter of the decided size. |
