PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the dependency on a visual field angle at the time of medium contrast display and to suppress the floating of a black level (Y value) at the time of impression of a high voltage by arranging polarizing plates on the respective opposite outer sides of both substrates and arranging a uniaxial phase plate having an optical axis in its thickness direction and having a negative retardation value on the opposite outer side of the one substrate. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device 20 is constituted by arranging a polarizer 22 on the incident side of a liquid crystal cell 21 of a twisted nematic type and arranging the uniaxial phase plate (perpendicular axis negative phase plate) 23 having the optical axis in its thickness direction and having the negative retardation value between the liquid crystal cell 21 and the polarizer 22. An analyzer 24 is arranged on the exit side of the liquid crystal cell 21 and the perpendicular axis negative phase plate 25 is arranged between the liquid crystal cell 21 and the analyzer 24. The retardation value Δn.d of the liquid crystal cell 21 is 300 to 600[mn(a+589[nm])] and the retardation value Δn.d of the phase plates 23, 25 is specified to -100 to -50[nm(at589nm))]. |
