PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element with which the meticulous control of gradations is possible. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element is constituted by sealing chiral nematic liquid crystals 13 added with about 1wt.% dichromatic dyes between a substrate 11 formed with electrodes 14 and a perpendicularly oriented film 16 and a substrate 12 formed with electrodes 15 and a horizontally oriented film 17. The twist angleθof the liquid crystal molecules of this liquid crystal display element is >=5πto <(5/3)πradian. The cell gap (d) of the liquid crystal display element and the natural pitch (p) of the nematic liquid crystals 13 are so selected that d/p satisfies the equation (θ/2π)-(1/4)<d/p<(θ/2π)+(1.4).
