PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a compact image with high resolution by reducing the traveling quantity of an optical material to the utmost at the time of coupling distance in accordance with variable magnification. SOLUTION: An image reading device is provided with a first slider 3 having an original exposing lamp 2 and a mirror 4, the second slider 5 having the mirrors 6 to 8, an image forming lens 10 and a line-shaped CCD. At the time of reading by the use of a first magnificationβ, an optical paths is formed by the mirrors 4, 6 and 7. At the time of reading by the use of a second magnificationβ2 (0<β2 <β1 <1), the optical path is formed by the mirrors 4, 6 to 7 and also the lens 10 is travelled in a positive direction to some extent on an optical axis.
