There is provided an apparatus for recording or hearing surrounding sound in an automatic response telephone. The apparatus includes: an automatic response mode converting part(10) for converting a present operation mode into an automatic response mode; a microprocessor(20) for converting an operation mode of the telephone according to a signal input from the automatic response into the automatic response and controlling the telephone such that the telephone performs the automatic response function when the ring signal is a selected number or more; a sound recording and replaying part(70) for recording surrounding sound of a sound detecting part according to the control of the microprocessor and replaying the recorded surrounding sound; and a sound output part for outputting the replayed surrounding sound.
