The payment collection terminal (1) is brought to the customer, and has readers (3,4) for payment or credit cards. Transaction data is entered (5,6,7) to the portable unit. The portable unit is able to communication with a base station (2). The base station has an automatically operated communication circuit, which processes the transaction data. The communication circuit (14,15;24,25) has circuits to format (8) and recognise (28) data streams. The communication is provided both by infra-red proximity coupling (14,24) and also by longer range radio coupling (16,26). Physical contacts (18,19) are also provided to allow direct connection. |
