The invention pertains to a process and associated device for metering the introduction of a quantity of reducing agent (4) into the exhaust gas or outlet air flow of a combustion unit, in particular an internal combustion engine (1) in order to break down harmful pollutants. The quantity of the reducing agent (4) so introduced is set via a functional relationship based on operational parameters of the combustion unit, exhaust gas (6) and (where appropriate) catalytic converter (2). That functional relationship is monitored during operation and adjusted in line with the current state and operating conditions of the unit, exhaust gas (6) and (where appropriate) catalytic converter (2).
