<p>A method and device for encoding/decoding a digital image in which an image is divided into areas having arbitrary shapes, the areas are efficiently encoded, and selected areas are reproduced. The digital image encoding device is provided with an input terminal, image dividing means, area vertical-order determining means, and encoding means. The image dividing means divides an image into a plurality of areas having arbitrary shapes, makes a division map, and inputs the map to the area vertical-order determining means. The area vertical-order determining means determines the vertical order of the areas by a prescribed method. The encoding means compression-encodes the luminance signal, the color difference signal, and the shape signal of each area in accordance with the vertical order. Before the shape of an area is encoded, the shapes of the adjacent parts of the area just above the area to be encoded are deformed so that the amount of codes may be the minimum.</p> |
