A fusing roller (52) is replaceable in a fuser in a fusing roller cartridge (50). The cartridge includes a fusing roller mounted for rotation in a housing (54), oil applying means (64), heating lamp (94), temperature sensors and an access opening (56). A pressure roller (110) in the receiving apparatus frictionally engages the fusing roller (52) to drive it during operation, making unnecessary separate drive connections for the fusing roller. Electrical connection with the lamp and temperature sensors is provided with a cartridge electrical connector (498) extending from a leading end of the cartridge (50). The cartridge electrical connector (498) mates with a receiving electrical connector in the fuser when the cartridge is inserted by movement parallel to the axis of rotation of the fusing roller (52). A cover (82) closes the access opening (56) when the cartridge is out of the fuser to protect the fusing roller (52). The cover (82) can be opened in response to insertion of the cartridge in the receiving apparatus and closed in response to removal of the cartridge from the receiving apparatus. A temperature sensitive fuse (205) is blown by the first usage of the fusing roller (52) to signal the apparatus that a fresh cartridge has been inserted. The oil applying means (64) is movable between applying and less applying conditions by actuating means (180) in the fuser.
