Heterocyclic derivatives represented by general formula (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein each symbol is as defined in the specification. The compounds (I) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof show excellent effects of inhibiting ACAT and inhibiting the peroxidation of lipids on mammals and thus are useful as an ACAT inhibitor and lipid peroxidation inhibitor. Namely, they are useful in the prevention and treatment of, for example, arteriosclerosis, hyperlipemia, arteriosclerotic lesions in association with diabetes, and ischemic diseases in brain and heart.
