The invention relates to a steering wheel having a wheel rim and a container attached thereto for holding a gas generator and an air bag folded therein and having a cover flap fitted to be openable and to cover the outlet for the air bag. That end of the container (11) which holds the gas generator (14) is connected to the steering column (10), and the steering wheel rim (12) is mounted at the container top end forming the outlet (16) and is connected to said container (11). The air bag (15) is squeezed, between the steering wheel rim (12) and the container (11), at its edge region (17) surrounding the air bag mouth and is folded through the air-bag mouth into the interior of the container (11) in such a manner that the closed shell of the air bag (15) is positioned between the gas generator (14) and the outlet (17).
