A ceramic consisting of Sr, Ce, Zr and O and doped with a trivalent cation is new. Pref. the ceramic contains 50-80% Ce and 2.5-10% of the trivalent cation. SrCO3, CeO2, ZrO2 and Yb2O3 of greater than 99.9% purity were weighed, mixed, coarsely ground, fired in air for 15 hrs., wet ground in ethanol and sieved to obtain less than 32 microns particle diameter powder which was dried for 10 hrs., fired, ground and sieved again. The powder was uniaxially pressed (3/*10<3> kg/cm<2>) to tablets (e.g. 1 cm diameter and 0.3-0.5 mm thick) which were sintered in air for 15 hrs. to 90% theoretical density. The chosen compsns. were: (i) SrCeO3; (ii) SrYb0.05Ce0.95O3-alpha; (iii) SrYb0.05(Ce0.75Zr0.25)0.95O3-alpha; (iv) SrYb0.05(Ce0.5Zr0.5)0.95O3-alpha; (v) SrYb0.05(Ce0.25Zr0.75)0.95O3-alpha; (vi) SrYb0.05Zr0.95O3-alpha; and (vii) SrZrO3. |
