To tighten the stitch, in a sewing or embroidery machine, the upwards movement of the looped upper thread is temporarily stopped during the last quadrant of the thread loop looping movement. The leg of the loose thread loop moving along the leading end side of the lower thread bobbin capsule is deflected outwards. Towards the end of the upwards movement of the upper thread loop, it is moved in a flat alignment on the lower thread as it moves in a generally vertical line from the bobbin capsule to the opening in the needle plate. Also claimed is a looper with a retainer (28) for the loose upper thread loop, at a gap outside the movement path of the looper body (17), to extend into the moving path of the upper thread for a temporary holding action. A deflector (26), with an axial action, is at the bobbin capsule carrier (18) for the leg of the upper thread loop moving along the leading side end (27) of the bobbin capsule (19). A fixed flat guide channel (30) for the upper thread loop is near the holding piece (24). A guide at the bobbin capsule (19) deflects the lower thread in a vertical take-off direction.
