The proposal is for a process and a device for controlling an internal combustion engine in which a predetermined number of cylinders is cut out in predetermined operating conditions to reduce consumption and pollutant emission. Besides a corresponding adjustment in the degree of cylinder filling, the ignition angle is corrected and/or the cylinders to be cut out are controlled, especially in the cut-out transition stage and when the cylinders are cut in again, in order to maintain the revolution speed selected by the driver.
