In a calender for satinising paper webs of different widths, the web passes through the nip (7) of a press formed between a heated hard roll (2) and a soft roll (3) provided with an elastic covering (6). The press has moving belts (11) of a thermally insulating material which substantially cover at least that part of the soft roll covering (6) not covered by the paper web.
