The vertically reciprocating tool plate (2) of the punching machine is suspended on opposite sides on a lever system in each case which has two lower elbow levers (4) and one upper elbow lever (5) with a vertical and a horizontal lever arm in each case. The two lower elbow levers (4) and the upper elbow lever (5) can be rotated at their angles about a fixed shaft (8, 11) in each case and their vertical lever arms (4a, 5a) are connected to one another by means of a prismatic joint (6). The horizontal lever arms (4b) of the lower elbow levers (4) support the tool plate (2) and the horizontal lever arms (5b) of the upper elbow levers (5) support counterweights (16). Between the two lever systems there is mounted a double cam (15) with eccentric pins (14, 14') which are situated diametrically opposite one another and are connected via connecting rods (12, 12') to the prismatic joint (6) of one or other of the lever systems in such a way that, when the double cam rotates, the tool plate (2) and the counterweights (16) reciprocate in opposite directions to achieve mass balance.
