Process for the preparation of aromatic or heteroaromatic nitriles

Prepn. of (hetero)aromatic nitriles (I) of formula (A; at least one of R1-R6 = CN or 1-7 C cycloalkyl) involves gas phase reaction of (hetero)aromatic hydrocarbons (II) of formula (A; at least one of R1-R6 = 1-8 C alkyl) with NH3 and (gas contg.) O2 at 200-600 degrees C and 0.1-5 bar on supported catalyst contg. 0.5-20 wt.% V oxide. The novelty is that the supported catalyst consists of 2-30 grain fractions, the average dia. of which differs by 10-80%, and the support has a bulk density of 0.6-1.2 kg/l; X = N or C-R6; R1-R6 = as above, otherwise H, 1-8 C alkyl, halogen, CF3, NO2, amino, 1-8 C aminoalkyl or OH. Also claimed is the supported catalyst per se and its prepn.
