A tank for storing and transporting liquefied gas comprises an inner casing 20 disposed within and spaced from an outer compartment 10 by the interposition of solid insulating blocks 30 adapted to transmit to the walls of the outer compartment the pressure exerted on the inner casing 20 while co-operating in guiding the inner casing during its expansion and contraction movements, and the remaining space between the inner casing and outer compartment being filled with granulated or powdered insulating material. The inner casing 20 is guided by T-sectioned elements 70, Fig. 8, secured to the outer faces of the inner casing and co-operating with T-sectioned grooves 71 formed in the blocks. Each of the faces of the inner casing are provided with four T-sectioned elements 70 arranged at 90 degrees to each other as shown in Fig. 2. In an alternative arrangement the inner casing is guided by pairs of chains 81, 82, Fig. 9, one of the ends of each chain being secured to the outer 'compartment at 84 and 85 and the other ends to a common point 83 on the inner casing. The insulating blocks 30 may be of cubic, prismatic or lozengesectioned, preferably arranged in staggered rows in order to avoid the ramming of the insulating powder. The insulating blocks 30 are secured to the walls of the outer compartment by glueing or by means of angle members secured to the compartment (Figs. 3 and 4 not shown), or alternatively may be secured at regular intervals on steel ropes (Fig. 7, not shown), the faces of the blocks which contact the inner casing being coated with a layer of a material having a low coefficient of friction such as hardwood to facilitate sliding therebetween. In another embodiment (Fig. 14, not shown), the insulating blocks are disposed in vertical row and the inner casing has alternate flat and curved portions. The inner casing may be strengthened by stiffeners 110-114 arranged as shown in Fig. 15 (or Fig. 17, not shown), welded or strapped to the outer or inner faces of the casing. Alternatively stiffeners may be nailed or glued to boards of impregnated wood disposed on the outer face of the inner casing, or to the insulating blocks. A further embodiment (Figs. 19 and 20, not shown), describes an arrangement wherein the solid insulating blocks are replaced by a grid or network of hardwood beams built up of parallel rows of beams crossed by parallel rows of beams in other planes. |
