PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricant comprising a specific tryptophan ester compound, excellent in lubricity, its long period durability and environment protection, and capable of imparting good travelability, abrasion resistance and durability to magnetic recording media. SOLUTION: This lubricant comprises a compound of the formula (R1 -R3 are each a hydrocarbon group; R4 is H, a hydrocarbon group), e.g. 3-[ 2-(octadecyloxycarbonyl)-2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl]indole. When the lubricant is used for a magnetic recording medium, the compound of the formula is coated on a magnetic layer in an amount of 0.5-100mg/m<2> , especially 1-20mg/m<2> , in a top coating process, or added into the magnetic layer in an amount of 0.5-20 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of a binder in a process for adding the compound into the magnetic layer. |
