Allene is isomerized to methyl acetylene by contact in the vapour phase at 150-410 DEG C. with Al2O3 which has been activated with a halocarbon of formula CnHyXz in which X=Cl, Br or I, n is 1 or 2, y is 0 to 5 and z is to 6, at a temperature sufficient to decompose the halocarbon, e.g. 350-850 DEG C. Examples describe isomerization at 290-340 DEG C., S.V. of 165 with yields of 48.7-73.1%.ALSO:Al2O3 is activated with a halocarbon of formula CnHyXz in which X = Cl, Br or I, n = 1 or 2, y = 0-5 and z = 1-6, at a temperature sufficient to decompose the halocarbon e.g. 350-850 DEG C. Additionally, the Al2O3 may be associated with quartz, porcelain, or corundum. Specified halocarbons are CH3I, CH3Br, CH3Cl, CHCl3, CHBr3, CCl4 and C2H4Cl2. |
