The fault location device has a current source (22) which charges the first capacitor (29) to a relatively low voltage. The first switch (32) at a required time point discharges the first capacitor over the primary winding in order to produce over the transformer (21) secondary winding a relative high voltage corresponding to the relatively low voltage. The secondary winding forms part of a high voltage circuit, which incorporates two cable connections (5), which are connected on opposite sides of the cable break (7). With this arrangement, on the discharge of the first capacitor an electrical flash-over (8) is produced at the cable break in order to locate it. The low voltage circuit incorporates a second capacitor (31), which is charged by the current source to a relatively low voltage. The high voltage circuit incorporates a current monitoring component (34), which monitors the current which flows through the high voltage circuit at the flash-over. |
