[Also in Division G6] An evaporator, which is suitable for use in concentrating radioactive effluents, comprises a vessel 2 associated with two (or more) heating circuits 14, wherein the liquid being evaporated flows up the heater conduit 20 by thermosiphon effect, and the boiling liquid is conducted, via conduit 22, tangentially into vessel 2 at a level about half-way up the vessel. The vapours leave vessel 2 through conduit 6, and the liquid returns to the heater-conduit through conduits 4 and 16. The liquid-to-be-evaporated is fed into the evaporator through conduit 12 which is provided with a valve (not shown) for maintaining the level of the liquid about half-way up vessel 2. The heater comprises electrical resistances arranged in a silica rod 28, and a boiling film of liquid rises up the rod. The conduit 4 is connected by a telescopic joint 8 to a T-connection 10; and the return-conduits 16 to the heaters are joined to the two limbs of the T-connection by telescopic joints 18. The tangential parts of the two conduits 22 which enter vessel 2 may be made of flexible plastic material; they are diametrically opposite to one another and open in opposite directions.
