A self-oscillating frequency-changer comprises a transistor whose collector circuit is coupled to a resonant line terminated in a tunable parallel resonant circuit, feedback to maintain oscillation being taken through a capacitor to the emitter circuit of the transistor from a point between a voltage node at the highest frequency of operation and the end of the line connected to the collector whereby the amplitude of oscillation is maintained substantially constant over the operative range. Received signals are amplified in common-base transistor 1 and then coupled from line 80 in the collector circuit thereof to an input line 13 for the frequency-changer transistor 14 through an aperture 34 in a screen 35. Line 13 is coupled magnetically to a line 17 in the emitter circuit of the transistor 14. The collector circuit of the transistor 14 comprises a line 22 terminated in a parallel-resonant circuit and a point X thereon is coupled through capacitor 24 to a point P in the line in the emitter circuit. A further magnetic coupling is provided between line 22 and portion PM of line 17. The point X lies between the end of line 22 connected to the collector of transistor 14 and the nodal point at the highest frequency of operation. It may be shown, Fig. 2 (not shown) that the magnitude of oscillation at the point X related to the amplitude of oscillation in transistor 14 decreases as the frequency increases; since however feedback increases with frequency the oscillation amplitude is maintained substantially constant. Intermediate-frequency output is taken through tuning components 28, 29 from tuned I.F. auto transformer 27, high-frequency being suppressed by coil 25. In modified circuits the coupling between lines 13 and 17 may be capacitive, Fig. 3 (not shown), the magnetically coupled feedback from line 22 may be omitted, Fig. 4 (not shown), or both these modifications applied simultaneously, Fig. 5 (not shown). A capacitor 5 in the base circuit of commonbase amplifier transistor 1 provides with the internal self-inductance of the transistor base circuit a series-tuned circuit resonant at that frequency in the operative range at which the amplifier gain is a maximum, thus providing a low impedance path from base to earth at this frequency and preventing self-oscillation in the amplifier.
