The spiral balancing spring (64) applies a balancing couple to the door or other panel to counteract the resistant couple due to the panel's weight. One end (72) of the spring is attached to a portion of the vehicle bodywork (38). The panel is mounted to the bodywork for rotation about a pivot axis (A1). The inner end of the spiral spring is attached to rotate a drive axis (A3) rotatable relative to the bodywork and parallel to the panel pivot axis.
