Voice-frequency generation of character string for rapid transmission

The method involves use of a portable voice frequency generator (50) which is used in combination with the microphone (60) of a telephone set or multimedia terminal (70). The generator produces e.g. three groups of frequencies from which two are selected for combination in different ways and simultaneously transmitted. The string of codes representing the combined frequencies is conveyed by a network (80) to a remote computer (90) with a facility (100) for reconstituting and processing the original character string. To suppress as many blank spaces as possible, the string is first processed so that no two successive characters are identical. The reverse operation is performed after transmission to obtain the original string.
