Diacetylene solutions substantially free from impurities are produced by (a) mixing the liquid condensate from an acetylene intense cooling plant at 10-30‹ C. with 10-30 times by volume of a hydrocarbon mixture boiling between 200‹ and 400‹ C., (b) treating the resultant liquid mixture with a C 1 -C 4 hydrocarbon heated to 100‹ C., (c) cooling the gas mixture obtained to 0‹ to - 30‹ C. and (d) washing it countercurrently with a C 1 -C 6 monohydric aliphatic alcohol cooled to - 10‹ to - 40‹ C. The hydrocarbon mixture in (a) may be a diesel oil or mineral oil fraction and the hydrocarbon in (b) may be methane or ethane or a mixture of the two. Preferably the alcohol in (d) is 10-20‹ C. cooler than the gas mixture. An example describes the production of a methanolic solution of diacetylene from a condensate initially containing 20% by wt. diacetylene, 12% methylacetylene, 20% monovinylacetylene, 10% cyclopentadiene, 0.5% triacetylene, and 0.5% phenylacetylene. |
