PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate automatically the diameter of a wire shaped material by obtaining a cross point position of the wire shaped material with respect to a reference line based on luminance data obtained through the retrieval of both sides of a picked-up image of the wire shaped material. SOLUTION: A camera head 3 picks up an image of a dummy wire A located orthogonally to an optical axis Z and in parallel with a valley line of totally reflection plane mirrors 11a, 11b. In this case, a reference plate 12 and its reference line 12a are in existence behind the dummy wire A. Then the camera head 3 picks up an image at the side of a checked part 1 via a middle space of a ring lighting 22 and an image pickup window 21a and R, G, B luminance signals of each pixel are outputted to a camera main body 4. The camera main body 4 applies A/D conversion to the luminance signals of each pixel to provide an output of R, G, B data. A personal computer 5 reads the data corresponding to each pixel, detects the reference line 12a based on the luminance data and discriminates the wire diameter based on both cross pints between the reference line 12a and the dummy wire A obtained by retrieving the pixels along with the reference line 12a. |
