PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the tooth-contact detecting device and the detecting method thereof, which can detect the tooth-contact state of a gear device at the time of loading. SOLUTION: A driving unit 20 drives a driving pinion 12 of a differential gear 11. Load units 30 and 40 generate the loads so as to obstruct the rotation of an engaging ring gear 13. A compound applying device 8 applies compound on a part whose position is different from a part whose image is picked up by a CCD camera, among the teeth of the gear 13. The compound is scraped from only the part in contact with the teeth caused by the engagement with the teeth provided in the driving pinion 12. The image of the scraped part is picked up by the CCD camera 7. The timings of the application of the compound with the compound applying device 8 and the copture of the image of the CCD camera 7 are controlled by a CPU.
