PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recording medium having satisfactory running performance and excellent in antistatic effect by forming a recording film on one side of a substrate and a metallic thin film type back coating film of an alloy having a prescribed compsn. on the other side. SOLUTION: A recording film 3 is formed on one side of a substrate 1 and a metallic thin film type back coating film 2 is formed on the other side to obtain the objective recording medium. The back coating film 2 is made of a Cu-Ni alloy contg. 5-40wt.% Ni and has 2,000Åthickness, 6nm surface roughness Ra, 100nm surface roughness Rz and 2×10<3>Ω/sq. surface electric resistance. This magnetic recording medium has high corrosion resistance and satisfactory running performance, is excellent in antistatic effect, is almost free from dropout and jitter, has high recording capacity per unit volume and easily undergoes quality inspection.
