The gear selector includes a selector lever operated manually by the driver which is guided along a path having a right-angle bend at one end where the lever is moved from a reverse to a park position. A pivoted bolt (6) holds the lever in the park position until there is compliance with a predetermined condition (e.g. pressure on the brake pedal). The blocking slider (21) has an enlarged head for engagement with the bolt. Its axial extremity protrudes from the electromagnet (25) when the bolt is not immobilised against rotation. A movable stop (41) prevents the release of the slider and bolt until the ignition key has been inserted and the ignition switched on.
