PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device in which a transfer failure resulted from the clearance between a transfer material and an intermediate transfer belt is effectively avoided to form an image of good quality free from image defect (reverse printing). SOLUTION: In an image forming device for primarily transferring a toner image T on an image carrier 1 to an intermediate transfer belt 2 and secondarily transferring the primary transfer image on the intermediate transfer belt 2 to a transfer material 3, a transfer device for secondary transfer has a transfer roll 5 capable of approaching to and separating from the intermediate transfer belt 2, and an opposed roll 6 on the inside of the intermediate transfer belt 2, and when the transfer roll 5 is in contact with the intermediate transfer belt 2, the angleαformed by the line connecting the center of the transfer roll 5 to the center of the opposed roll 6 and the intermediate transfer belt 2 is set less than 90 deg.. When the transfer roll 5 is in contact with the intermediate transfer belt 2, the intermediate transfer belt 2 is changed to the form laid along the peripheral form of the transfer roll 5 and the opposed roll 6. Further, the approaching and separating direction of the transfer roll 5 is the same as the connecting line connecting the center of the transfer roll 5 to the center of the opposed roll 6.
