Solar cell energy source for portable device e.g. pocket calculator

The solar cell has a monocrystalline silicon substrate (1) with two opposite major surfaces (2,3). One surface (2) incorporates a number of diode elements connected in series, each diode having a p-doped zone (4'). A cooperating n-doped zone (5',6') is provided along the other major surface with which a pn-junction is formed. The p-doped area of each diode extends along the top surface and extends in a partial region (40) from the upper major surface to the lower one. The n-doped zone (6') on the lower major surface is the more heavily doped and it contacts the p-doped via a contact (11).
