A (1 min R,3S)-3-(1 min -hydroxyethyl)-azetidin-2-one (I): wherein R<1> represents H or a hydroxyl-protective group is prepared by reacting a (2S,3R)-2-aminomethyl-3-hydroxybutyric acid (II): with a sulfenamide (III): wherein R<2> represents or and R<3> and R<4> each represent hydrogen (but not simultaneously) or a hydrocarbon group, or R<3> and R<4>, together with the N atom form a heterocyclic group, and triphenylphosphine. The reaction yield is high, and the sulfenamide (III) is cheap and recoverable.
