The disclosure relates to a feed device (1) for a thread-type winding material (25). With the proposed feed device, a minimum reserve of winding material (25) can be maintained in a storage winding (27) in an economical way which prevents the end of the winding material from jamming and ensures that the material is taken off in the axial direction without unravelling. This is achieved with the present invention by the provision of an axially sliding control disc (7) of at least one leading incline (12), the axial path of the control disc (7) being detected via a sensor (9, 10) and/or switch and converted to a signal characteristic of the winding size.
