Length of a nuclear fuel pin at the periphery of a fuel assembly is measured by moving a Foucault current probe (10) along the axial direction of the sheath. A 1st position of the probe is determined, in relation to a mark (20), at which the probe signal indicates the presence of a 1st plug. A 2nd position is determined at which the probe signal indicates one of the following: an end of a spring in contact with the 2nd end of the column of fuel or the internal surface of the 2nd plug. The characteristic length is calculated from these 2 probe positions in relation to the mark (20). Also claimed is an apparatus for carrying out the above method that includes a Foucault current probe (10) means (12, 16, 19) of displacing it axially and means (20, 25) of determining the position of the probe (10).
|
