A gear selecting mechanism for opening and closing a vehicle sliding door comprises a swingable member 41 held in a neutral position by a return spring 48. The swingable member 41 supports an output gear 38 mounted on a shaft 37 of a motor and engaged with first gears 49, 50 which are coupled via a clutch/brake (see fig 17), having a predetermined frictional resistance, to second gears 53, 54. Rack members 51, 52 mesh with the second gears 53, 54 so that rotation of the first gears 49, 50 and the second gears 53, 54, via the motor and output gear 38, causes the swingable member 41 to rotate and either one or the other of the first gears 49, 50, depending upon whether the door is to be opened or closed, to engage drum gear 35. When the motor is not energized, the return spring 38 returns the swingable member 41 to the neutral position. A drum (see fig 12), integral with the drum gear 35, is connected to the sliding door through a wire cable having tensioning means (see figs 6 to 10). |
