Device for locking tiltable split backrests on a motor vehicle rear seat

The rear seat of the vehicle is split into two independent sections. Each is locked into the upright position by a locking catch (6) on the outside edge. A safety locking belt (3) is mounted inside one seat back and is activated by a servo drive (4) to lock together the two sections. A crash sensor activates the servo. The servo drive can be a gas generator which operates on the bolt drive either by a cable drive (7) or by a pneumatic connection. The crash sensor operated catch braces the seat back against the inertial forces of items in the rear luggage space.
