PURPOSE:To achieve rapid and proper ignition timing adjustment of an internal combustion engine at all times by discriminating the octane value of gasoline in accordance with the positional relation between the ignition timing for maximum torque and a knocking limit point. CONSTITUTION:There is provided means A for controlling ignition timing so as to achieve maximum torque. There is also provided means B for controlling ignition timing so as to prevent knocking. There is further provided octane value responsive ignition timing selecting means C for discriminating the phase relation between the ignition timing for achieving maximum torque and a knocking limit point to select a proper one between the ignition timing for high-octane gasoline and that for regular gasoline. This assures positive discrimination of the octane value and optimum control in an ignition timing adjusting device (KCS) for preventing knocking of an internal combustion engine and an ignition timing adjusting device (MBT) for achieving maximum torque. |
