The load-engaging device claimed in the parent Specification is modified by the provision for the jaw-locking wedge of a " lock-set " position which is retained whilst the jaws are moved to their open position. The wedge 17 is moved to the lock-set position, Fig. 11, by manually rotating a bell-crank 18, Fig. 1, clockwise by a rod 25 and levers 22, 24. The wedge is retained in this position by a lug 75 which rests on a projection 41 and co-operating projections 42, 43, and 45, 51. Until the lifting device is raised away from the load the wedge stays in this position. When the device is lifted the jaws move about and the projection 41, Fig. 12, lifts the wedge clear of the projection 45 and it is urged by a spring 33, Fig. 1, and bell-crank 18 to a position in which it can drop down and lock the jaws when they subsequently close. Fig. 13 shows the jaws open position. As the jaws close the projection 41 rotates clockwise and pushes on the lug 75 thereby dislodging the wedge which drops down and locks the jaws closed. |
