The exhaust system having a catalytic converter (3), which is fitted with an ignition device for igniting a mixture of surplus hydrogen and surplus oxygen arriving at the ignition device, and is fitted with a hydrocarbon absorber. The catalytic converter has a number of catalytic converter matrices arranged in series, each of the matrices having a catalytic wash-coat. The hydrocarbon absorber is located adjacent a converter matrix which is upstream of other converter matrices , and in the washcoat of. The matrices arranged in series, one of the catalytic matrices being upstream of other of the matrices, and have a washcoat, with the ignitor device is located between two adjacent matrices, one being upstream. Surplus oxygen is fed from one or more combustion chambers of the engine fitted to the exhaust system. A electronic fuel controller (8) supplying lean mixture is arranged to completely block the fuel to the supply unit during limited period of rotation at point of initial starting of engine.
