PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily and inexpensively obtain 3-substituted-3-methylbutanoic acid useful as a raw material for synthesizing a chrysanthemum-monocarboxylic acid ester as an insecticide, etc. by oxidizing a specific butanal with a hypochlorite in the presence of an N-oxyl compound. SOLUTION: (A) 3-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanal and/or 3-methoxy-3-methylbutanal is reacted with (B) a hypochlorite (e.g. 13% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, etc.) in the presence of (C) an N-oxyl compound (e.g. 4-benzoyloxy-2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidinyloxy, etc.) e.g. at 5-30 deg.C. For example, in order to adjust the pH of the reaction system, 5-20mol% based on the component A of a salt such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc. is preferably used. |
