PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition having a high electric voltage maintaining ratio and cell resistivity and useful for an active matrix-type liquid crystal display element using a thin membrane transistor, etc., having an improved display defect such as a burning by reducing the content of a compound having a phenolic OH to a specific amount or less. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition contains <=1×10<-5> mol/g content of a compound containing a phenolic OH such as a compound of the formula [R<1> to R<3> are each a 1-12C (branched) alkyl, a 2-8C (branched) alkoxyalkyl, a halogen, a substituted cyclohexyl (methyl), an aryl, etc.], a raw material of a liquid crystal such as a fluorine-based raw material of the liquid crystal, and further if necessary, a chiral dopant such as cholesteryl nanoate and a dichromatic pigment such as an azo- or anthraquinone-based compound.
