An yttrium or gadolinium oxide or yttrium-gadolinium oxide phosphor activated by europium in the ratio grm. atm. Eu to grm. mols. of oxide between 0.002:1 to 0.3:1 preferably 0.04:1 to 0.15:1, wherein borax is added as flux in the phosphor preparation in the ratio of grm. mols. of borax to grm. mols. of rare earth oxide between 0.001:1 to 0.2:1, preferably 0.01:1 to 0.1:1 (0.05:1 is mentioned). The firing temperature may be 1200 DEG C. for instance, within the range 1100 DEG to 1250 DEG C. and in examples, starting materials including Gd2O3, Y2O3, Eu2O3, EuF3 and Borax are fire at 1150 DEG C. for 2 to 3 hours in air, yielding a phosphor, of reduced after glow, and few fine particles, with peak emission at 6110 </>rA under 2537 </>rA radiation and cathode rays. Incorporation in colour C.R. tubes and fluorescent lamps is mentioned.
|
