PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use an external illumination detecting device through an auto light system and to perform automatic lighting and lighting OFF of a headlamp and. a small lamp according to adaptation to the degree of recognition of external illuminance of a driver by a method wherein external illuminance adapting to the degree of recognition of external illuminance of a driver is detected without the occurrence of wide deviation from the degree of recognition of external illuminance of a driver. SOLUTION: In an external illuminance detecting device which has a light receiving lamp 6 to measure an amount of receiving light is provided and detecting external illuminance from a light receiving amount measured by a light receiving sensor 6, the light receiving sensor 6 is arranged in a position where beams transmitting a rear window shield glass 1 and entering a car are received.
