PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly active catalyst excellent in dimer selectivity, useful esp. for propylene dimerization, by mutual contact between a specific nickel compound, a specific organophosphorus compound, an organoaluminum compound and a specific compound. SOLUTION: This catalyst is obtained by mutual contact between (A) a nickel compound, i.e., an organic acid nickel salt, inorganic acid nickel salt or nickel complex compound [e.g. bis (acetylacetonato)nickel] (B) an organophosphorus compound of the formula, PX<1> X<2> X<3> (X<1> -X<3> are each H, a halogen or 1-12C hydrocarbon residue), (C) an organoaluminum compound, and (D) a compound of the formula, MX<4> n (M is Mg, Ti, etc.; X<4> is H or a halogen; (n) is the valence number of M), the formula, MRn (R is a 1-12C hydrocarbon group), the formula,MR'<4> Rm (R' is a 1-12C hydrocarbon group), the formula, MX<4> 1 Rm ((l) and (m) are each number satisfying the relationship: (n)=(l+m)), the formula, MX<4> l R'm , the formula, MR1 R'm , the formula, M<1> (BR4 )p (M<1> is Li, Ca, etc.; (p) is the valence number of M<1> ) or the formula, R"(BR<4> ) (R" is a 1-12C hydrocarbon group or ammonium group). |
