PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent HC poisoning of ceria of a Pd/ceria component by preparing a Pd/ceria component and Pd/alumina component in a mutually mixed state by mixing a ceria powder, an alumina powder and a Pd salt soln. and drying and baking the resulting mixture. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas purifying catalyst 1 of an engine is obtained by two upper and lower catalyst layers 3, 4 on a honeycomb monolithic carrier 2 made of cordierite. That is, the upper layer is a Pd/(ceria + alumina) catalyst layer formed by mixing a ceria powder and an alumina powder and bonding a Pd salt soln. to the mixed powder and drying and baking the whole. The lower layer is a Pd/alumina layer 3 formed by supporting Pd on alumina. In the upper Pd/(ceria + alumina) catalyst layer 3, Pd/ceria particles formed by supporting Pd on ceria particles and Pd/alumina particles formed by supporting Pd on alumina particles are uniformly mixed and dispersed. |
