PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing poly-β-alanine having a high degree of polymn. and a very low content of vinyl polymn. units by using a specific catalyst in the hydrogen transfer polymn. of acrylamide. SOLUTION: A fluorine anion is used as the catalyst in the reaction for forming poly-β-alanine by the hydrogen transfer polymn. of acrylamide. Pref. at least one compd. selected from among sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, and cesium fluoride is used as a fluorine anion doner. Pref. the polymn. is performed by preparing a mixed or dispersed solvent from an org. solvent and an aq. soln. of the catalyst, removing at least a part of water contained in the solvent to homogeneously disperse the catalyst therein, and putting acrylamide into the solvent contg. the catalyst homogeneously dispersed therein to cause the polymn. Usually a pref. amt. of the anion doner used is 0.001-30mol% of acrylamide.
